When it comes to taking multiple choice tests, theres this common piece of advice that often gets thrown around. When in doubt, always choose C. Right? Or maybe for you it was B cause this advice comes from everywhere. Maybe you heard it from your dad or your teacher or you read it on the internet. Im pretty sure that I heard it from some kid in my eighth grade history class named Jimmy, but as Abraham Lincoln once didnt say, Always independently verify advice given to you by eighth graders named Jimmy. Truer words have never not been said. So today we are gonna go over some more well-founded and useful advice that you can use to make sure you ace that next multiple choice test you got coming up in the future. And Ive got five main strategies to go through as well as one secret weapon of sorts, so lets just get started. First off, when those test papers flutter down to your desk, dont just start immediately going through the questions one by one in a linear fashion. Instead

Where possible, state the stem in positive rather than negative terms. The use of negatives can confuse students and lead to sentences that are difficult to interpret. If negatives cant be avoided, highlight the negative in the stem of the question (e.g. in italics). In particular, avoid double negatives.
So we can use Purple, Blue, Green, as distractors (wrong answer choices) for the given MCQ which has Red as the correct answer. Purple, Blue, Green are also called as Co-Hyponyms of Red. So using Wordnet, extracting co-hyponyms of a given word gets us the distractors of that word.
Distractors are the incorrect answers in a multiple choice question. Choosing your distractors poorly can make your multiple choice questions much easier or harder than you may have intended.
A wrong answer or unanswered question both result in zero points. When no correction for guessing is applied, the final grade will correspond to the number of correct answers.
Based on this synthesis, MC items should consist of three options, one correct option and two plausible distractors. Using more options does little to improve item and test score statistics and typically results in implausible distractors.
The purpose of a distractor is to see if the learner can discriminate between correct and incorrect answer choices. This demonstrates what a participant knows or doesnt know. It shows whether someone performs a task correctly or incorrectly. Thus, distractors can be a valuable source of information.
Tips to Answer Multiple Choice Questions with Negative Marking: Always try to attempt the maximum number of questions. If you think the first option is correct, make sure that last option is not all of the above Follow the same rule for the option none of the above
Points to keep in mind when designing distractors Distractors shouldnt be too similar or too different. Distractors should be homogeneous in content. Eg: Pink, Blue, Watch, Green makes it obvious that Watch might be the answer. Distractors should be mutually exclusive.
