- Whats up my friend, Abbie here and welcome back to Writerslife Wednesdays where we come together to help you make your story matter and make your author dreams come true. Today were talking about negative character arcs more specifically, how to write a negative character arc that frustrates your reader in a good way and leaves them thinking long after they finish your story. Its simpler than you might think. First, Im going to demystify the whole idea of negative character arcs and debunk some popular ideas. Then Im going to show you the one overarching structure that can be applied to any negative character arc. And heres the best part it can be used in tandem with the three-act story structure. So it lines up with everything else that I teach on this channel. And finally, were going to case study some of my favorite negative character arcs and look at what makes them so compelling and memorable. Get ready to take some notes. Why does your story matter? Good question. What i

These include the two Truth-driven or heroic arcsthe Positive-Change Arc and the Flat Arc. And the three Lie-driven or Negative-Change Arcsthe Disillusionment Arc, the Fall Arc, and the Corruption Arc.
In a disillusionment arc, the character realizes life is not as great as she thought. For example, she may come to learn that sometimes hard work isnt enough to get your dreams--there are things outside of your control, and thats the truth she realizes at the end.
In a Disillusionment arc, your character experiences a series of conflicts that hint at their tragic Truth. But instead of facing this Truth, your character clings to the comfort of their Lie. In a Fall arc, this series of conflicts sees your characters Lie act as an obstacle in their pursuit of a goal or resolution.
Negative Arc Example: Azula She already has everything she could want. But rather than be satisfied, she craves more. She thwarts her brother and shames her Uncle Irohshell be the one to bring her father the Avatar, and shell conquer the city her Uncle lost in battle.
But sometimes that change is negative, driven by humanitys darkest urges and blindnesses. Both stories are necessary, which is why were rounding out our two-part series with a beat-by-beat look at the three Negative Arcsthe Disillusionment Arc, the Fall Arc, and the Corruption Arc.
Typing a caret after the opening square bracket negates the character class. The result is that the character class matches any character that is not in the character class. Unlike the dot, negated character classes also match (invisible) line break characters.
Negative character arcs are less common but hardly rare. These are the stories where the characters get worse. They become more morally bankrupt, they are broken down, they double down on their bad behavior, they go down the slippery slope
Characters with negative arcs descend into evil, become corrupted, or fall victim to flaws of their own personality. Its no wonder that many of these stories end in death. The signature example for this type of character arc is that of Michael Corleone in The Godfather.
Similarly, the negation variant of the character class is defined as [^ ] (with ^ within the square braces), it matches a single character which is not in the specified or set of possible characters. For example the regular expression [^abc] matches a single character except a or, b or, c.
Moral ascending character arc examples Eleanor Shellstrop - The Good Place. Han Solo - Star Wars. Prince Zuko of the Fire Nation - Avatar the Last Airbender. Princess Azula of the Fire Nation - Avatar the Last Airbender. Walter White - Breaking Bad. Anakin Skywalker - Star Wars. Katniss Everdeen - The Hunger Games.
