Okay so today, Iamp;#39;ve decided to try and turn some lead into gold. The first step is to get a few pieces of lead, and to add some dilute nitric acid. The acid almost immediately starts reacting with the lead, and dissolving it. Itamp;#39;s turning it allinto lead nitrate, and it only took a few minutes,for most of it to disappear. Eventually though,it started to slow down, so I turned on the hot plate, and I added a bit more nitric acid. So now itamp;#39;s done, and Iamp;#39;ll just temporarily put this to the side. What I have to do next is get a beaker, and add some boiling water, and a small amount of potassium iodide. This all dissolves really quickly, and on top of this, Iamp;#39;ll add a bit of vinegar, and that little lead solution from before. Now all I need to do is turn off the stirring, and basically just wait. As it cooled down it turned yellow, and I started seeing little shiny specks. Tin (Sn) is a relatively soft and ductile metal with a silvery white colour. It has a density of 7.29 grams per cubic centimetre, a low melting point of 231.88 C (449.38 F), and a high boiling point of 2,625 C (4,757 F).
9 Crude tin is most commonly refined by heat treatment (pyrometallurgical) but can also be refined by electrolytic methods. Heat treatment consists of heating the tin slab slightly above its melting point but below the melting points of impurities, such as iron and copper.
It is a soft, silvery white metal with a bluish tinge, known to the ancients in bronze, an alloy with copper. Tin is widely used for plating steel cans used as food containers, in metals used for bearings, and in solder.
There are two methods of refining impure tin. Fire refining is most commonly used and produces tin (up to 99.85 percent) suitable for general commercial use. Electrolytic refining is used on the products of complex ores and to produce a very high grade of tin (up to 99.999 percent).
