here we see a sheet of square cells which at low power can actually appear as a hyper chromatic crowded group but when we look at it at higher power we can see as we focus up and down that the NC ratios are still quite low thats quite a lot of space between nuclei and we can also see that there are some inflammatory cells within the cell group so thats neutrophils associated with the squamous cells and we also notice that the cytoplasm of the squamous cells is fairly dense and one other interesting feature is that the nuclei tend to stream in one direction you can see the sort of like a direction here as they go at a different field we can appreciate that the nuclei are large the nuclear membranes are very small can declare extremely around and the chromatin is quite open and their prominence nucleoli the cytoplasm is still quite abundant and very dense and sometimes in repair or reactive cell groups we can actually see these little cytoplasmic tails that appear to kind of have this

On occasion you may see a report from a Pap test or tissue biopsy stating atypical cells present. This might cause you to worry that this means cancer, but atypical cells arent necessarily cancerous. Many factors can make normal cells appear atypical, including inflammation and infection.
Epithelial cell abnormalities This means that the cells lining the cervix or vagina show changes that might be cancer or a pre-cancer.
These cell changes are usually more serious than ASC (atypical squamous cells). This means there is a greater risk that precancer or cancer is present. This result is sometimes called mild dysplasia. It indicates low-grade changes that are usually caused by an HPV infection.
Mild inflammation was defined as less than 30 inflammatory cells/high-power field; moderate inflammation was defined as 30 to 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field; and severe inflammation was defined as more than 100 inflammatory cells/high-power field.
Most abnormal Pap smear results are nothing to worry about Most women will have at least one abnormal Pap smear result in their lifetime, with an overall average of 5% of all Pap tests coming back as abnormal. In most cases, the abnormal result is nothing to worry about, but its important to follow up to make sure.
Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common. In fact, of the 3 million women with abnormal Pap tests each year, less than 1% (13,240 cases) will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
High Grade Abnormal Pap Test Results High grade cervical cells identified by Pap test results can indicate the presence of precancerous cervical dysplasiawhich can be caused by strains of HPV that are associated with a high risk of developing canceror, sometimes, cervical cancer itself.
An abnormal test result does not mean you have cancer. Your health care provider will recommend monitoring, more testing, or treatment.
