[Music] bgp link state it is not new its been kicking around since oh 2015 or so and on the surface of it you might think why why are we carrying link state information in bgp thats not what bgp is for and yeah youre not the only one with an automatic reaction like that but the reality of bgp ls has more nuance to it we might jokingly call bgp the kitchen sink of routing protocols but the engineering choices that were made were made for a reason remember everythings a trade-off to educate us on what bgpls is and why it exists is honest gredler hes heavily involved in the deepest corners of the networking industry as a cto and founder of startup rt bric offering cloud native routing software for telcos and in the past he has also chaired the ietf isis working group and was a distinguished engineer at juniper networks and he holds some routing patents and hes a published office you get the idea honest knows whats going on when it comes to bgpls and he volunteered to share some of

In the Internet, there are three types of routing protocols commonly used. They are: distance vector, link state, and path vector. In this chapter, we present the basic concepts and fundamentals behind each of these three types of protocols in a generic framework.
Link State protocols in comparison to Distance Vector protocols have: Big memory requirements. Shortest path computations require many CPU circles. If network is stable little bandwidth is used; react quickly to topology changes. Announcements cannot be filtered. All neighbors must be trusted.
Features of Link State Routing Protocols Link State Packet: A small packet that contains routing information. Link-State Database: A collection of information gathered from the link-state packet. Shortest Path First Algorithm (Dijkstra algorithm): A calculation performed on the database results in the shortest path.
In link-state routing protocols, each router possesses information about the complete network topology. Each router then independently calculates the best next hop from it for every possible destination in the network using local information of the topology. The collection of best-next-hops forms the routing table.
Link State routing protocols are based on Dijkstra algorithms. Link State routing protocols are very much scalable supports infinite hops. Link State routing protocols are classless which means that they support VLSM and CIDR. Cost is the metric of the Link State routing protocols.
Link State Advertisements (LSAs) are messages communicated via multicast to other routers in the OSPF domain. They are sent from internal routers to the DR/BDR routers to announce changes. This communication occurs on multicast address 224.0.
Examples of Link state routing protocols include OSPF - Open Shortest Path First and IS-IS - Intermediate System to Intermediate System.
The link state routing algorithm consists of two phases. In the first phase (Reliable Flooding), the information about neighbors is gathered and transmitted. In the second phase (route calculation), every router uses the shortest path computation algorithm to calculate the most optimal route to every router.
