The MCL is on the part of the knee closest to the other knee (the "medial" side). It connects the bottom of the thighbone (femur) to the top of the shinbone (tibia). The MCL helps keep the knee from moving side to side.
Collateral ligament injury Often you will have pain at the sides of the knee and swelling over the injury site. If it is an MCL injury, the pain is on the inside of the knee. An LCL injury may cause pain on the outside of the knee. The knee will also feel unstable, like it is going to give way.
An MRI can show the extent of an ACL injury and signs of damage to other tissues in the knee, including the cartilage.
A grade 3 ACL sprain is a complete tear. A complete ACL tear is extremely damaging to the knee and almost always requires surgery, plus a long recovery period. If you've suffered a grade 3 ACL sprain, you likely experienced severe pain and instability in the knee.
Surgical treatment is recommended for individuals with a grade 3 or complete ACL tear. Surgical options may vary based on the type of ACL injury, whether the patient has open or closed growth plates, and the type.
Optimal rehabilitation is staged for return to aggressive sports activities or heavy labor after approximately six months. Expected recovery for those who do not need surgical intervention usually occurs in three months at which time swelling should be resolved and strength is usually recovered.
The surgery to correct a torn knee ligament involves replacing the ligament with a piece of healthy tendon. A tendon from the kneecap or hamstring, for example, is grafted into place to hold the knee joint together. The tendon graft may come from the person (autograft) or from an organ donor (allograft).
The ACL arises from the anteromedial aspect of the intercondylar area on the tibial plateau and passes upwards and backwards to attach to the posteromedial aspect of the lateral femoral condyle.
Complete ACL tears cannot heal on their own, and therefore, almost always require surgical intervention. The ligament, given its location in the knee, cannot spontaneously heal because it has poor blood supply to it.
