The following steps provide you with control of the Telnet or SSH connections to the switch by applying ACLs on VTY lines: Create IP or IPv6 access lists with permit or deny filters. Enter the VTY mode by using the line vty command. Apply the access lists to the VTY line with the access-class command.
An ACL (Access Control List) is a set of rules that allow or deny access to a computer network. The network devices, i.e., routers and switches, apply ACL statements to ingress (inbound) and egress (outbound) network traffic, thereby controlling which traffic may pass through the network.
Configuring VTY lines to use an ACL, restricts the sources where a user can manage the device. You should limit the specific host(s) and or network(s) authorized to connect to and configure the device, via an approved protocol, to those individuals or systems authorized to administer the device.
Normally ACLs reside in a firewall router or in a router connecting two internal networks. When you configure ACLs, you can selectively admit or reject inbound traffic, thereby controlling access to your network or to specific resources on your network. You can set up ACLs to control traffic at Layer 2-, or Layer 3.
To configure standard or extended ACL on a vty line, we use the 'access-class {access-list-number|access-list-name} {in|out}' configuration commands. We enter the command under the vty line configuration mode. For our example, we have routers R1, R2, and R3 here. We want R1 to allow connections with R2 but not with R3.
Procedure If the connection you want to create the ACL for is not open, search for and select the connection. Select Add a new list from the Access Control List (ACL) drop-down list. Enter a name and description. Enter the remaining ACL settings. Setting. Description. Access for Users. ... Click Save New ACL.

The command access-class is used to apply the access list to the VTY lines.
Why should I use Access Control Lists? The primary reason is to provide a basic level of security for the network. ACLs are not as complex and in depth of protection as stateful firewalls, but they do provide protection on higher speed interfaces where line rate speed is important and firewalls may be restrictive.
Access control lists (ACLs) perform packet filtering to control which packets move through the network and where. Such control provides security by helping to limit network traffic, restrict the access of users and devices to the network, and prevent traffic from leaving a network.
