An access control list (ACL) is a list of rules that specifies which users or systems are granted or denied access to a particular object or system resource. Access control lists are also installed in routers or switches, where they act as filters, managing which traffic can access the network.
An ACL works as a stateless firewall. While a stateful firewall examines the contents of network packets, a stateless firewall only checks if the packets follow the defined security rules. ACLs are tables containing access rules found on network interfaces such as routers and switches.
Access Control Lists (ACLs) provide the capability to filter packets at a fine granularity. MAC ACLs are ACLs that filter traffic using information in the layer 2 header of each packet.
Normally ACLs reside in a firewall router or in a router connecting two internal networks. When you configure ACLs, you can selectively admit or reject inbound traffic, thereby controlling access to your network or to specific resources on your network. You can set up ACLs to control traffic at Layer 2-, or Layer 3.
The type of operation on the data. Most common options used: create, read, write, delete, and list_edit. If the ACL is active or not. This field is helpful if you are debugging ACLs.
You can apply router ACLs on switch virtual interfaces (SVIs), which are Layer 3 interfaces to VLANs; on physical Layer 3 interfaces; and on Layer 3 EtherChannel interfaces. You apply router ACLs on interfaces for specific directions (inbound or outbound).
The most common examples of Access Control List include web servers, DNS servers, and remote access or VPN systems. The internal router of a DMZ contains stricter ACLs to protect the internal network from more specific attacks.
In the case of Networking ACLS, they are installed in networking devices (Routers and switches) with the sole purpose of filtering traffic. This is done by using pre-defined rules that decided which packets transferred.
An ACL works as a stateless firewall. While a stateful firewall examines the contents of network packets, a stateless firewall only checks if the packets follow the defined security rules. ACLs are tables containing access rules found on network interfaces such as routers and switches.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the key ligaments that help stabilize the knee joint. The ACL connects the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia).
