The letter should be about one page in length and generally consist of three parts: opening, body, and closing. The writer should explain the relationship between himself/herself and the candidate as well as why the letter is being written.
The most effective letters of recommendation are written by professors or work supervisors who know you well enough to describe your academic, personal, or professional achievements and potential with candor, detail, and objectivity. Letters that compare you to your academic peers are often the most useful.
Recommenders are strongly encouraged to submit their letters by the deadline, but will still be able to submit after the posted date. The application deadline is provided to recommenders in the Letter of Recommendation Request email.
If your recommender wants to send a hard copy, make sure to print out any ranking form that needs to accompany the evaluation letter. Then give your recommender a pre-stamped, pre-addressed envelope. Typically, these envelopes should be sent to the schools undergraduate admissions office.
Some will write the majority of the letter and insert a paragraph or two from the collaborator; some will use we throughout the letter to comment on their collective work with you; some will designate different collaborators ideas by using their names or initials to clarify what comes from which source.
If a school wants two recommendation letters, only submit two. The goal is to maximize your chances of being accepted, so its important to keep the admissions officer in mind and avoid doing anything that makes their job harder.
At the beginning of your recommendation letter, make your relationship with the candidate clear. Briefly mention how long youve known each other, how you met and the settings in which your relationship developed.
Greeting: Address the recipient by name if possible (Dear Ms/Mr). Personal introduction: Begin the body of your letter by introducing who you are and your relationship to the applicant. Recommendation: What makes the candidate a good fit? Offer specific examples of skills or qualifications that match the role.
