Hello everyone, following up from the previous tutorial on one-to-one join by attributes, today well discuss the second type the one-to-many join, where there are many rows or features for one corresponding feature geometry. Well demonstrate these procedures using the Farms Classified by Total Farm Capital table, which includes the numbers of farms reporting in six separate capital categories for each corresponding boundary. The table also requires some formatting inan external editor, including extracting the joint information which is not unusual for performing joins or integrating Statistics Canada tables with vector data presently. So within the table well begin by moving the first Census Agricultural Region name down to align with the first capital category and delete the row it was in. Then well copy the main table to a new workbook to continue editing. So now we must fill the Census Agricultural Region names for each capital category. So under

There are two ways to combine tables: Joins and Relates. Joins are used for 1-to-1 relationships, or many-to-1 relationships between the attribute table and an external table. Relates are used for 1-to-many relationships, or many-to-many relationships between the attribute table and an external table.
A relate exists in a map or layer file. Relates are great because they allow you to select features in a layer, then easily see related features in a different layer or related records in a nonspatial table. A relationship class is an object in a geodatabase. Relationship classes enable smart behavior.
Summary. Relates a layer to another layer or table based on a field value. Feature layers, table views, and raster layers with a raster attribute table are supported. The records in the Relate Table are matched to the records in the input Layer Name or Table View.
In ArcMap,right-click the layer to which you want to join attributes, point to Joins and Relates, and click Join. To join two spatial datasets, click the first drop-down arrow and click Join data from another layer based on spatial location.
Select the features, choose the feature and attributes to preserve, and click Merge. In the Contents pane, confirm that the layer you are editing is selectable and editable. On the Edit tab, in the Features group, click Modify . Click the Merge tool. Click the Existing Feature tab in the tool pane. Click Select.
When performing an attribute join, the joined fields are dynamically added to the existing table. Field propertiessuch as aliases, visibility, and number formattingare maintained when a join is added or removed.
Whats the difference between relate and join for tables in ArcGIS? When you have matching unique IDs in two tables, you can create a table relate or table join. A table join appends all the columns from one table into the other table based on the unique ID. But a Table Relate creates an entirely new table.
Usage notes. The Join Features tool is designed to transfer and append information from one layer to another. The information that is transferred is based on the type of spatial relationship defined or based on a common attribute that is shared between the two datasets.
