now what Id like to show you is how to combine data from different data sets in particular do something that you would call a relate in a database system like in Microsoft Access or Oracle or sequel server but in in are gonna call it a join so what weve got is features in in one feature class or a shape file here Ive got County boundaries for Wisconsin and Ive got population information in another file you know a text file that Ive brought in into Ark and I want to connect the two because I want to make a map of that population values so lets quickly glance up the attribute tables here the key to this is that I need some field that I can use to connect the two that was called our join field so if I look through these fields and see a lot of different potential values this is actually slightly confusing but actually see one called GIS join so Im gonna Im gonna kind of look to see if I have something similar and my other file make sure I select the right one and so Ive got GIS j

Usage notes. The Join Features tool is designed to transfer and append information from one layer to another. The information that is transferred is based on the type of spatial relationship defined or based on a common attribute that is shared between the two datasets.
To join two datasets: In ArcMap,right-click the layer to which you want to join attributes, point to Joins and Relates, and click Join. To join two spatial datasets, click the first drop-down arrow and click Join data from another layer based on spatial location.
Summary. Joins a layer to another layer or table based on a common field. Feature layers, table views, and raster layers with a raster attribute table are supported. The records in the Join Table parameter value will be matched to the records in the Input Table parameter value.
There are two ways to combine existing features and create a new feature in ArcMap: Merge and Union. Merge combines two or more features from the same layer into one. Union creates a new feature from two or more selected features of the same geometry type. The features used with this tool can be from different layers.
Navigate to the Analysis ribbon tab, and click Tools in the Geoprocessing group to open the Geoprocessing pane. On the Toolboxes tab, navigate to Data Management Tools Joins and Relates, and click Add Join.
Joining attributes in one table to another In the table of contents, right-click the layer or table you want to join, point to Joins and Relates, then click Join. Click the What do you want to join to this layer? Click the field on which the join will be based. Choose the table to join to the layer or table.
In ArcMap,right-click the layer to which you want to join attributes, point to Joins and Relates, and click Join. To join two spatial datasets, click the first drop-down arrow and click Join data from another layer based on spatial location.
The bullets you listed are correct, joins are for adding additional information such fields or columns to an existing table, and merge is for creating a new table that has the combination of rows from table A, B, C..etc.
