Some aspects of technical and scientific writing require italics, as do physical quantities or mathematical constants. Examples include species names such as Homo sapiens, and the constant c (the speed of light).
Sometimes, though, italics may be acceptable if the point would be lost without it. (Note: It is often difficult to know when rewriting isnt enough and italics are the better way to go, so if you do use this device, use it sparinglyno more than once in an essay, as a general rule.)

So, for indicating paragraphs, do not indent and instead break them up with a double space.
