Binding energies of common chemical states: Charge referenced to adventitious C1s, C-C peak at 284.8eV.
Adventitious carbon contamination is commonly used as a charge reference for XPS spectra. C1s spectrum for contamination typically has C-C, C-O-C, and O-C=O. components. The C-C component may be set to a binding energy of 284.8eV, by default.
XPS spectra measurements (1S carbon (C1S) peak energies) of the GO materials; the C1S spectra is deconvoluted into five types, represented as CC (blue), CO (cyan), COC (pink), C=O. (green), and OC=O.
X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) or Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) is a technique which analyzes the elements constituting the sample surface, its composition, and chemical bonding state by irradiating x-rays on the sample surface, and measuring the kinetic energy of the photoelectrons emitted
Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.
Other Peaks in XPS Spectra The spectrum in Figure 1 includes a sequence of peaks labelled O KLL. These peaks represent the energy of the electrons ejected from the atoms due to the filling of the O 1s state (K shell) by an electron from the L shell coupled with the ejection of an electron from an L shell.

XPS is based on the creation of a core hole via ionization and provides a method to study the geometric, electronic and chemical properties of a sample. In XPS photons with sufficient energy are absorbed by a system causing core electrons to be ejected from the sample.
