In 1968, Spencer Silver, a scientist at 3Ms headquarters in Maplewood, was working to create a strong adhesive. Accidentally, he developed a new material that was light enough to easily remove and peel apart. Silver felt that he had invented something unique and useful but struggled to find what that use could be.
Sticky notes are small pieces of colorful paper, usually square, with a light-weight adhesive strip on the back. Sticky notes are used for brainstorming sessions in order for participants to visually post ideas in front of others and/or remain anonymous as they write down and share ideas.
When Spencer Silver, an employee researcher at 3M, was trying to create a stronger adhesive for the aerospace industry, all he ended up being able to create was a weak adhesive that could easily be removed without residue.
Both are made by an adhesive company, 3M, but the sticky stuff on Post-it notes was actually a mistake. In the late 1960s, a 3M chemist named Spencer Silver was trying to make a stronger, stickier glue when he created Post-its wan, weak adhesive.
Spencer Silver, a 3M scientist, was busily researching adhesives in the laboratory. In the process, he discovered something peculiar: an adhesive that stuck lightly to surfaces but didnt bond tightly to them.
Art Fry was working at 3M and was aware of Silvers reusable adhesive. He also sang in a church choir and had a regular problem of losing his hymn notes in his church song book. Fry was then the person to suggest using the adhesive on the backs of paper so that they could be stuck and removed without leaving residue.
The name Post-it Note was patented until 1997 and remains trademarked today. Conversely, the term sticky note is neither patented nor trademarked. Like tissue vs Kleenex or lip balm vs Chapstick, sticky note refers to the type of product and Post-it Note refers to the 3M brand in particular.
