As the name implies, an EIN is a number that the IRS issues to be able to tell businesses apart from one another. Applying for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a free service offered by the Internal Revenue Service. Beware of websites on the Internet that charge for this free service.
How much does it cost to get an EIN? Applying for an EIN for your California LLC is completely free. The IRS doesnt charge any service fees for the EIN online application.
You may apply for an EIN online if your principal business is located in the United States or U.S. Territories. The person applying online must have a valid Taxpayer Identification Number (SSN, ITIN, EIN). You are limited to one EIN per responsible party per day.
Select Account and Settings. Go to the Company menu, then click the edit icon from the Company name section. Enter your EIN in the field. Hit Save, and Done.
To apply for an employer identification number, you should obtain Form SS-4 PDF and its instructions PDF. You can apply for an EIN online, by mail, or by fax. You may also apply by telephone if your organization was formed outside the U.S. or U.S. territories.
Technically it is advised to wait until your LLC is formed before the EIN is obtained, for two reasons: you want to make sure that the name you chose is in fact registered and was not rejected (for whatever reason), and secondly, you do want to provide the IRS with the exact date of formation.
