The primary difference between the two is that an EIN is used to identify a business entity while an ITIN is assigned to individuals who need to file a tax return but dont have an SSN because they are non-resident business owners.
Use your EIN on all of the items that you send to the IRS and the Social Security Administration (SSA). Caution: An EIN is for use in connection with your business activities only. Do not use your EIN in place of your social security number (SSN).
Heres how: Click the Gear icon on the right panel. Select Account and Settings. Go to the Company menu, then click the edit icon from the Company name section. Enter your EIN in the field. Hit Save, and Done.
LLCs arent formed with the IRS. They are formed with your state. You are supposed to form an LLC in your state, and then apply for an EIN (aka Federal Tax ID Number).
How Many EIN Numbers Can You Have? Each business entity can have only one EIN assigned to it. However, if a business changes from one entity type to another (e.g., converts from an LLC to a C Corporation), it must retire the existing EIN and obtain a new one.
Technically it is advised to wait until your LLC is formed before the EIN is obtained, for two reasons: you want to make sure that the name you chose is in fact registered and was not rejected (for whatever reason), and secondly, you do want to provide the IRS with the exact date of formation.
Heres how to get an EIN for an LLC in four steps. Step 1: Identify Your Legal Structure. The first step is to identify what type of legal structure is applying for an EIN. Step 2: Authenticate the Responsible Party. Step 3: Provide Details about the LLC. Step 4: Receive Your EIN Confirmation Letter.
While most limited liability companies (LLCs) will need an EIN, there are some exceptions. Multiple-member LLCs are required as a business entity to use an EIN to file taxes, but sole proprietors and single-member LLCs, or LLCs with only one member, are not and can use their Social Security numbers instead.
