Can I add my partners name to the mortgage after buying the house? The only way to add your partners name to the mortgage, whether youre getting married or simply want to split ownership of the home, is to refinance into a new loan.
The only way to change the names listed on a mortgage is to refinance in the new borrowers names. If you divorce, for example, youll need to meet the qualifications to refinance the house in your name alone. If you want to add someone to your mortgage, youll both need to jointly qualify to refinance the mortgage.
Most lenders have no problem with allowing two unmarried people to apply for a mortgage together. You might think theyd be concerned the loan could go unpaid if the couple splits up, but that risk is there for married couples as well.
