because we donamp;#39;t quite have one for every single room in the house I decided to make my wife yet another cutting board I really wanted this one to be a high quality and durable piece so I decided to make it a walnut engrain board and the slab of Walnut that I had was sporting some dry Rod so I figured Iamp;#39;d try to salvage as much material as I could and just work around it and then to Jazz it up a bit I figured a contrasting inlay would look pretty sharp also so Iamp;#39;ll work in another neat feature into the bottom which I think will make using the board even easier well here we go letamp;#39;s get started after getting the chunk of slab cut off the first step was to flatten one side over on the Joiner with that done I could then reference that edge on the table saw and begin to cut the slab into strips now with this piece being more than 2 in thick I had to take several pass while raising the blade between cuts this was to avoid overheating the blade burning

Slab style Finger boards are approximately . 25 thick in the center and glued flat on the maple portion of the neck. Veneer style Finger boards are approximately . 11 thick and glued over the maple portion on the neck that has already been radiusd.
Nacre (mother of pearl), plastic and wood are the materials most often used as inlay.
For straight, end-mill inlays, especially in cutting boards, I will usually to 0.25.
Modern Martin fretboards are about 0.225 thick, but can be as much as 0.250. Theres no purposeful effort to vary the thickness along the length of the board, and since they boards are fretted before being glued to the neck, theres no way for them to be inadvertently thinned through sanding.
Step 1: The first step is to measure the inlay and carefully map out where it will be on the fretboard. Step 2: Following that, you can lightly glue the inlay down on the fingerboard within your measured lines. Step 3: From there, take a sharp razor and score/cut around the outside of the inlay.
Most of the inlay blanks from Stuart MacDonald are about 0.050, a little thicker. But 0.040 should be easily workable, just be a little more careful with depth of the cavity for the inlay.
The usual thickness for a fret board on a guitar is 1/4 inch. Some builders thin that to 3/16 or somewhere in between. The problem I see with a veneer top on a fret board is longevity. It may look OK and last for a little while, but eventually the player will wear through the veneer to the wood underneath.
Inlay is the process setting in shell, wood, stone, metaletc. into a cavity that has been hollowed out of the surface. It is then glued, filled, and sanded flush. The possibilities are endless and the techniques vary, but these are the key steps to create your own inlaid piece.
