Measuring Your Ducts Unscrew or unbolt the existing air vent. Theyre typically secured by 4 bolts or screws. Remove the old vent cover. Using a tape measure, measure the width and length of the hole. This should correlate to the neck size. Purchase modern air vent cover based on those measurements.
Standard register sizes can range anywhere from 2-1/4x10 up to 8x14. The most common sizes are 4x10, 4x12, 6x10, and 6x12 in medium-sized rooms such as bedrooms and dining rooms. Smaller sizes may be found in areas such as laundry rooms, bathrooms, and hallways.

You just need to measure the size of the duct opening not the faceplate. Side wall or ceiling register sizes are width first then height.
Measure the Opening Get the width and length of the opening in the floor, wall, or ceiling. Round up to the nearest inch. These measurements correspond to the measurements of the new vent covers. If the measurement of the hole in the floor (wall or ceiling) is 10 x 4, then you want to order a 10 x 4 register.
Measure Vent Covers Remove your existing vent cover. Note: Do not measure your existing cover. MEASURE THE DUCT OPENING IN YOUR FLOOR, WALL OR CEILING. (LENGTH IN INCHES -BY- HEIGHT IN INCHES) THIS IS YOUR DUCT OPENING SIZE. Match the duct opening size to the corresponding vent cover size listed on the product listing.
For homes that have HVAC units installed, these are an integral part of the operation. Since hot or cold air is being forced out to change the temperature of the room, it happens via floor registers. These are nothing but metal or non-metal plates with holes in them for the hot or cold air to blow through.
