Vinyl records can be produced in three different sizes. The ones youre probably the most used to are 12-inch records, or long-plays (LPs for short.) Of course, different sizes also means different speeds.
The Stylus Besides diamonds, sapphires are also commonly used for record needles. The stylus is connected to the tonearm by a flexible strip of metal. The flexibility in the middle allows for the stylus to ride up and down within the record grooves. The stylus can be either spherical or elliptical.
Inlay. The printed literature that appears in the back of CD cases. Inner Sleeve. Protective sleeve held inside the main cover that houses and protects the record. Insert.
The inlay card creates the cover for the back and both spines, while the CD Cover inserts into the lid of the CD case.
A record sleeve is the outer covering of a vinyl record. Alternative terms are dust sleeve, album liner and liner. The term is also used to denominate the outermost cardboard covering of a record, i.e. the record jacket or album jacket.
The term wax is a common slang word used to refer to vinyl records. It originates from the material used to make early records, which was made of a substance called shellac. However, as technology evolved, vinyl became the predominant material used for record production.
A phonograph, later called a gramophone (as a trademark since 1887, as a generic name in the UK since 1910), and since the 1940s a record player, or more recently a turntable, is a device for the mechanical and analogue reproduction of recorded sound.
