To format a block quote in Microsoft Word, follow these steps: Hit Enter at the beginning and end of the quote. Highlight the quote and select the Layout menu. On the Indent tab, change the left indent to 0.5.
You can use a colon to introduce a quote. Mark Twain said it best: When in doubt, tell the truth. If a quote is longer than forty words, skip a line after the colon and indent the left margin of the quote five spaces.
A colon should always be used to introduce a quotation after an independent clause. An independent clause contains a subject and a predicate. It could function as a complete sentence if removed from its place in the paragraph.
Use a colon when introducing a quotation with a full independent clause (one that can stand on its own).
Put the quotation inside your own sentence, rather than putting it in the middle of a page and then commenting on it. This is called embedding a quotation. So rather than: He flew like a butterfly. This is an example of a simile, which shows that he was light and graceful.
A colon or semicolon is placed outside the quotation marks (regardless of whether or not it exists in the quoted material).
Different methods for creating a block quote in Word In a Word document, select the quoted text, then click Layout on the ribbon. Set the left indent to 0.5cm, and click the Enter key. Use the arrows in the indent size box to increase or decrease the indentation. Once in place, the block quote can be formatted.
Introduce your quote, then on a new line, indent the entire quotation inch from the left margin. The in-text citation follows the ending punctuation of the quotation. Remember to maintain double spacing in the essay.
