Marquetry is a decorative technique where wood veneers are sawn into a pattern and then assembled like a jigsaw. Inlay is similar but instead of assembling a large panel of veneer, the decoration is inset into a recess cut into a larger panel of wood.
Fill the hole with the granulated inlay material. Fill it loosely; dont pack it in too tightly. It is best to mound the granules up a little bit over the hole. A small spoon or even a toothbrush can help put the granules in the right place.
An inlay is a design or pattern on an object which is made by putting materials such as wood, gold, or silver into the surface of the object. an inlay of medieval glass. [ + of] woodwork with mother-of-pearl and silver inlay.
A drop of the resin is placed on the surface of the ceramic and the tip of the brush is wetted with the adhesive. The brush is placed in contact with the drop of resin on the ceramic (Figure 6) and then light-curing of the adhesive is accomplished (Figure 7).
Start with a gluing jig You then cut thin strips from a packet and combine them with other thin solid woods or veneers to form patterned strips of inlay. A simple shop-made gluing jig and clamping caul help align the packet parts, assuring the symmetry of the pattern.
For finer inlay materials, such as powders or our Mother of Pearl White Inlay flakes, Starbond Super Fast Thin will be your best bet. First put the inlay material in to the crack, then apply the Thin over the top of it.
If there are any remaining gaps or holes in the veneer you can fill with a wax filler after you have stained and sealed or just sealed the wood. *You could try method 2 using a cold hide glue, (Titebond) but this would mean leaving a weight / pressure on the repair for 48 hrs or more.
