inlay, in the visual arts, any decorative technique used to create an ornamental design, pattern, or scene by inserting or setting into a shallow or depressed ground or surface a material of a different colour or type. Inlay techniques are used in enamelwork, furniture decoration, lacquerwork, and metalwork.
Ancient Origins Inlay art finds its earliest roots in ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Greece. These ancient cultures used materials like precious stones, shells, and metals to embellish objects with intricate patterns and motifs.
Inlay on metals The technique of metal in metal inlay was sophisticated and accomplished in ancient China as shown in examples of vessels decorated with precious metals, including this ding vessel (pictured) with gold and silver inlay from the Warring States period (403-221 BC).
Marquetry is a decorative technique where wood veneers are sawn into a pattern and then assembled like a jigsaw. Inlay is similar but instead of assembling a large panel of veneer, the decoration is inset into a recess cut into a larger panel of wood.
Start with a gluing jig You then cut thin strips from a packet and combine them with other thin solid woods or veneers to form patterned strips of inlay. A simple shop-made gluing jig and clamping caul help align the packet parts, assuring the symmetry of the pattern.
The earliest evidence that I am aware of for marquetry/inlay is a remarkable casket from the city or UR, in Mesopotamia dated c2600 BC. Much of the work is cut from ivory and set in bitumen and is a pictorial representation of a mixture of royal and daily life.
The first inlay works are probably attributable to the first Egyptian dynasty, who lived around 3000 BC. They could create works of well-made inlay materials of various kinds and colors such as glass, ivory, obsidian, quartz, wood.
To put it simply, wood inlays are created by carving a void into the surface of a piece of wood, then filling that void with a piece of contrasting wood or other material cut to the same dimensions.
