Inlays are usually indicated when there has been repeated bdocHub in the integrity of a direct filling as metal inlays are more superior in strength. It is also indicated when placement of direct restoration may be challenging to achieve satisfactory parameters (shape, margin, occlusion).
An dental inlay is recommended for repairing damage to your tooths structure, which is usually caused by decay or trauma. The damage needs to be extensive enough that your tooth needs to be topped off with an artificial layer of enamel or dentin.
The primary distinction between an onlay and an inlay is that an onlay will cover a cusp of the tooth, whereas an inlay only fills the area between the cusps.
Inlays are used to fill, cover and patch larger portions of a cavity, hole or gap on the biting surface of a tooth than could be sealed with a filling, and where that cavity, hole or gap is contained within the cusp of your tooth (inside the perimeter as opposed to over the shoulders or cusps of the tooth.
Moderate to Large Cavities: Inlays are an excellent choice when a tooth has a moderate to large cavity that cannot be effectively treated with a standard dental filling. In such cases, an inlay provides better strength and longevity.
The inlay/onlay requires a minimum of 1.5 mm occlusal space and all cuspidian angles must be rounded and the margins must have a shoulder shape with a rounded internal angle or a wide chamfer. The preparations should have a minimum ceramic thickness of approximately 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm.
Basic principles for the formation of cavities for inlays: The cavity is formed considering the route of administration and outputting of the inlay. Prophylactic expansion of the cavity for the prevention of caries recurrence. Ensuring of strength of the walls and the bottom of the cavity to chewing pressure.
Receiving an inlay or onlay is necessary when a person is missing more than half of the tooth, or if more than half of the tooth is decayed.
