XML is a semantic markup language for storing data in XML files, while DITA is a set of principles for organizing these XML files. Thus, you can use XML to store structured data when adopting a structured authoring paradigm.
The three base DITA information types are concept, task and reference. What is a topic? A topic in DITA is an independent chunk of information covering a single idea or task, authored as a unit, and stored in its own file. Topics are categorised by information type.
Using DITA XML, you can create structured content once and then reuse it in multiple formats and contexts. This allows you to break down your content into smaller modules that can be reused in different ways. Modular content is easier to understand, update, and translate than unstructured content.
DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) is a method of writing and storing content using a set of structuring rules that tell machines how to interpret that content. Its essentially a system of tags and maps that allow you to navigate through your content more easily.
DITA doesnt have an actual variables element, but you can use keyref to accomplish the same thing. A variable is a symbol that represents something else. You might use the variable productname so that if youre product name switches, you dont have to update all instances of the product name in your documentation.
Content created using DITA is in XML format, making it machine-readable. DITA content is componentized, arranged in topics and maps, and most commonly stored in a component content management system (CCMS).
DITA content is created as topics, each an individual XML file. Typically, each topic covers a specific subject with a singular purpose, for example, a conceptual topic that provides an overview, or a procedural topic that explains how to accomplish a task.
