If you want to add a series of number rows without doing so manually, use the Fill Series tool to generate a column with a list of numbers in it. Click the Home tab, then hover over to Editing, then Fill, then Series.
If you want to number your columns, you can use the COLUMN() function in the same way as the ROW() . Just fill in your first cell with =COLUMN(A1) , select the cell, then expand the selection to the rest of the cells you want your numbers to be in.
Use the ROW function to number rows In the first cell of the range that you want to number, type =ROW(A1). The ROW function returns the number of the row that you reference. For example, =ROW(A1) returns the number 1. Drag the fill handle across the range that you want to fill.
Heres how you can do it: Type your starting value in a cell (e.g., A1). In the cell below it (e.g., A2), enter the value 10 more than the starting value (A1 + 10). In this example, its =A1+10.
Use autofill to complete a series In a column or row, enter text, numbers, or dates in at least two cells next to each other. To highlight your cells, drag the corner over the cells youve filled in and the cells you want to autofill. Autofill. If you dont see Autofill, first tap More .
Unlike other Microsoft 365 programs, Excel does not provide a button to number data automatically. But, you can easily add sequential numbers to rows of data by dragging the fill handle to fill a column with a series of numbers or by using the ROW function.
Adding One Method Click the cell you want to use to start your sequence. Enter the number 1 into the cell. In the next cell down, key in the formula =C1+1 (assuming C1 is your starting cell) Click the formula and then drag it down to the number you want to end your sequence with.
Select any cell within your data range. On the Data tab, in the Sort Filter group, click Custom Sort. In the Custom Sort dialog box, under Column, in the Sort by box, select the first column that you want to sort. Under Order, select how you want to sort:
