Welcome back from what I hope was an exciting holiday for everyone. So today weamp;#39;re going to talk about user authentication. So the basic challenge that we want to address today is how can human users prove their identity to a program? In particular, the paper that was assigned for todayamp;#39;s class addresses an existential question in the security community. Is there anything better than passwords for authentication? So at a high level it seems like passwords are a terrible idea. So they have very low entropy, its very easy for attackers to guess them. Also the security questions that we use to recover from lost passwords often

To use an API that requires key-based authentication, the user or application includes the API key as a parameter in the request, typically as a query parameter or in a header. The API provider verifies the key and then allows or denies access to the API based on the users permissions and the APIs usage limits.
Basic authentication is a simple authentication scheme built into the HTTP protocol. The client sends HTTP requests with the Authorization header containing the word Basic, a space character, and a username:password string encoded in Base64.
To authenticate API requests, use basic authentication with your email address and password, your email address and an API , or an OAuth access . All methods of authentication set the authorization header differently. Credentials sent in the payload or URL are not processed.
Simply put, Spring Security hold the principal information of each authenticated user in a ThreadLocal represented as an Authentication object. In order to construct and set this Authentication object we need to use the same approach Spring Security typically uses to build the object on a standard authentication.
Basic Auth and API keys can also be used together. You can pass the API key via Basic Auth as either the username or password. Most implementations pair the API key with a blank value for the unused field (username or password).
AuthenticationEntryPoint is an interface used in Spring Security that sends an HTTP response asking for the users credentials when an unauthenticated user tries to access private or protected resources. When this occurs, the appropriate AuthenticationException or AccessDeniedException is thrown.
To generate the JWT , we need a secret key and the expiration time; these values are read from the application configuration properties file using the annotation @Value. The secret key must be an HMAC hash string of 256 bits; otherwise, the generation will throw an error.
It involves sending credentials as user/password pairs in an Authorization header field, where the credentials are encoded using Base64. However, these credentials are not hashed or encrypted, which makes this authentication mechanism insecure unless it is used in conjunction with HTTPS.
