This is the case whether you use a direct quote, a paraphrase, or even just a direct or indirect mention. You need to include a brief citation in the text at the place where you refer to the source, and a full citation in your bibliography or reference list.
Personal communications such as emails, phone calls, or text messages are cited in the text only, not in the reference list, because readers cannot retrieve personal communications.
The Harvard Style dictates that when using anothers exact words, known as direct quotation, then those words must be placed in inverted commas/quotation marks ( or ) followed by an in-text citation that includes the Author Last name, Year and page numbers.
If you have directly quoted words from a source (in inverted commas, or in an indented paragraph), provide the author, year, and specific page number for that quotation. (For material without page numbers, give the paragraph number.) Include a complete reference in the reference list.
An exact quote should be in quotation marks ( ), or if the quotation is 40 words or more, should be formatted as a block quotation. Then you put an In-Text Citation right after the quotation to show where the quote came from.
British English uses single quotation marks to indicate quotations or dialogue. The UWSC says, This is how British people do it.
You do not need to use quotation marks. Always use in-text citations when you paraphrase or summarize, to let the reader know that the information comes from another source. Continue to use signal phrases as well.
In fact, if you can remember the three main rules below, you should be in good shape. 1 Place punctuation marks inside quotation marks. 2 Capitalize the first letter of the quoted sentence. 3 Include an opening quotation mark at the beginning of each new quoted paragraph.
You should use quotation marks any time you use words directly from another source. Sometimes, students think putting a citation or reference at the end covers it, but you must use quotation marks to indicate borrowed words.
There are various reasons to use direct quotations in academic writing. Youll usually use them as an example of ideas in your assignment, but exactly how you use them varies depending on your discipline. History or Sociology students use quotes differently to Biology or Computing students, for example.
