if you have a modern inkjet printer especially those from Canon or Epson you may have noticed it uses to black ink cartridges also since one is larger it makes more sense to buy extras for that one and skip the smaller one right well not exactly in general the to black ink cartridges contain different types of ink used for different purposes the smaller of the two usually contains regular dye based ink similar to the color inks it is less expensive and interacts well with the other colors when printing photos and other color output as an example several Canon models use the CLI 221 BK cartridge which contains dye based ink the larger of the two cartridges generally contains pigment based ink this ink is not absorbed into the paper as deeply as dye based ink but dries on to the surface this makes for deeper blacks which is why it is often used when printing text documents it also is the benefit of longer-lasting prints the downside is that pigment based ink is more expensive to produce
