What is Reverse Pyramid Training? Also known as the Oxford Method, reverse pyramid training is a protocol where the first set has the smallest number of reps and heaviest weight. Then you add reps and lower the weight as you move through sets. The decrease in the weight is generally 5-15 percent of the max weight.
The Drawbacks of RPT This means that the workouts can only be performed with a low frequency. Volume is also low, as its not possible to train to failure for a high amount of volume. As volume is one of the key drivers of progress, eventually RPT will cease being effective. Not suited to the beginner.
Research has shown that weight training, and specifically reverse pyramid weight training, is possibly the most effective exercise regimen to build muscle efficiently, and has so many health benefits to offer.
Of the two approaches to pyramid training, reverse pyramiding offers the best approach since youre lifting heavy at the beginning when your muscles are still fresh and youre not neurologically fatigued either. Dont forget to warm up. If you grab your heaviest weight without a proper warm-up, you risk injury.
A pyramid grows progressively heavier with fewer reps from one set to the next. The lighter sets serve as a warmup for the heaviest sets. A reverse pyramid grows progressively lighter with more reps from one set to the next. Pyramids and reverse pyramids let you work one exercise through an entire rep range.
Reverse Pyramid Training vs Straight Sets With straight sets youre doing the same amount of work (reps x weight) each time. With reverse pyramid training, the drop in weight each set can seem like less work. That little boost in motivation can help you lift better and in turn give you better results.
Does Reverse Pyramid Training Work? Yes, Reverse Pyramid Training is an effective way to build muscle and gain strength. Its not necessarily better than traditional hypertrophy training, but its at least equally as good.
Reverse Pyramid Training (RPT) is a training style in which the first set of a given exercise is performed with the heaviest weight. Each subsequent set is performed with a lighter weight but for higher reps.
