On November 10, 1865, Henry Wurz, commander of Andersonville Prison (Camp Sumter) in Georgia, was executed for his actions during the Civil War, making him the only Confederate officer put to death for war crimes. In contrast, even Confederate President Jefferson Davis faced minimal consequences. Built in 1864, Andersonville was the largest Confederate military prison, designed to relocate prisoners from Richmond, Virginia, for better security and food supply. Operational for just over a year, the camp housed over 45,000 Union soldiers, with approximately 13,000 dying from disease, starvation, exposure, and poor living conditions. The first prisoners arrived in early 1864.
