The National ID (IT) data masking policy generates a valid Fiscal Code number based on the source data. When the Fiscal Code number is masked, the part containing the name is copied from the source and the other parts are masked. The result is always the same for different runs of the same source data.
Column-level security simplifies the design and coding of security in your application, allowing you to restrict column access to protect sensitive data. For example, ensuring that specific users can access only certain columns of a table pertinent to their department.
Column masking (sometimes referred to as data masking) lets you assign the MASKED attribute to columns so that unprivileged users cannot view the data. Users with the UNMASK privilege can see the data that is masked to other users and can also control how that data can be interacted with.
A masking policy is defined on a table column. It dynamically masks data values in that column whenever the column is referenced in SQL statements. For example, a masking policy can be defined to redact all but the last four digits in a credit card number.
Snowflake supports masking policies as a schema-level object to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access while allowing authorized users to access sensitive data at query runtime. This means that sensitive data in Snowflake is not modified in an existing table (i.e. no static masking).
You can implement column-based security in Snowflake in two different ways. The first is by using a Secure View to abstract data from the underlying table, and the second is by using the Dynamic Masking feature. Note that Dynamic Masking is currently only available to Enterprise accounts or higher.
In BigQuery, use schema annotations to assign a policy tag to each column where you want to restrict access. Enforce access control on the taxonomy. Enforcing access control causes the access restrictions defined for all of the policy tags in the taxonomy to be applied. Manage access on the policy tags.
If you want to replace an existing masking policy and need to see the current definition of the policy, call the GETDDL function or run the DESCRIBE MASKING POLICY command. For masking policies that include a subquery in the masking policy body, use EXISTS in the WHEN branch of the CASE function.
