An explanation of benefits (EOB) is the insurance companys written explanation regarding a claim, showing what they paid and what the patient must pay. The document is sometimes accompanied by a benefits check, but its more typical for the insurer to send payment directly to the medical provider.
The basic concept of insurance is that one party, the insurer, will guarantee payment for an uncertain future event. Meanwhile, another party, the insured or the policyholder, pays a smaller premium to the insurer in exchange for that protection on that uncertain future occurrence.
EOBs and Confidentiality Insurers generally send EOBs to the primary insured, even if the medical services were for a spouse or dependent.
What is an assignment of benefits? An AOB is an agreement that transfers the insurance claims rights or benefits of the policy to a third party. An AOB gives the third party authority to file a claim, make repair decisions, and collect insurance payments without the involvement of the homeowner.
An insurance policy is a written contract between the policyholder (the person or company that gets the policy) and the insurer (the insurance company). The policyholder is not necessarily the insured.
EOB documents are protected health information. Electronic EOB documents are called edi 835 5010 files.
