It gives you a snapshot of how well students have understood todays lesson so you can tell whether you can start building your next layer. Ideally, the exit tickets take students less than 5 minutes to complete, with somewhere between 1-3 questions. Aim for a mix of quantitative and qualitative questions. With paper exit tickets, teachers give each student a slip at the end of class.
Consider how you will grade: Generally, leaving exit tickets ungraded or grading them complete/incomplete will keep the focus on the information in the tickets rather than correctness, and can keep student stress levels down.
Exit ticket ideas may include multiple choice or short questions, or even a few sentences answering an exit question. A good exit ticket may contain 3 to 5 questions on a piece of paper that students should be able to answer in just a few minutes before a unit ends.
Exit tickets can be anonymous; however, dont take it personally if some responses are unconstructive or personal. Recommend that exit tickets be around 1 to 2 sentences long. Exit tickets can be physical, Google Form link, or Brightspace survey. We recommend keeping it easy and quick.
Some recommendations for exit tickets include: Exit tickets should be low stakes (i.e. not graded). Two to five questions are fine, students should be able to complete finish in a few minutes. Embed exit tickets through your teaching units and not just the end of a unit or semester.
Some possible prompts or questions to use for the ticket to leave: Name one important thing you learned in class today. What did you think was accomplished by the small group activity we did today? Write/ask one question about todays content - something that has left you puzzled.
