In this tutorial, Austin Kelly discusses how to write an effective personal reference letter. He advises only accepting requests to provide a character reference if you know the individual well enough to speak positively about their traits relevant to the job. The key components to include in a personal reference letter are: 1) the nature of your relationship with the candidate (e.g., volunteering together or personal connections), 2) the duration of your acquaintance, indicating how many years you have known the candidate, and 3) a description of the candidate's positive personal qualities. This structure helps create a credible and impactful reference.

How to write a character reference Start off by discussing your relationship with the applicant. Establish how long you have known the applicant. Talk about their positive qualities and give examples. Finish with a recommendation for the position. Include your contact information.
In the closing paragraph, offer to provide more information and include your contact information (phone and email) to demonstrate you are available to give a verbal recommendation or answer further questions if necessary. You might also reiterate that you recommend this person wholeheartedly or without reservation.
Conclude with a sincere statement recommending the student to the specific college or university. If the student is sending the letter to a single institution, mention the school in your conclusion.
A reference should be a factual, honest and positive account of your experience with a candidate. Be sure to include specific examples of achievements or good qualities where possible, and include the key details highlighted in the What to Include in a Reference section above to give a good personal reference.
5 Use a formal closing The last thing you need to do is to use a formal closing to end the reference letter. You can use a standard phrase, such as Sincerely, Respectfully, or Best regards, followed by your name, title, and contact information.
The basic format of your end-text reference will be: Author, A. (Date). Title of the work.
Provide three to five personal qualities of the candidate. A few examples of positive traits are strong communication skills, a good work ethic, a passionate and dedicated attitude and commitment to a particular cause.
Importantly it should cover the relationship between the subject and yourself, as well as how long you have known each other. It should also include examples of your character, personality and work ethic.
I am delighted to provide a character reference for [friends name]. We became firm friends in [primary school] and have known each other for [x years]. [Friend] is one of the most positive, hardworking and responsible people I know. [He or she] is kind and cool-headed in a crisis.
The closing of the letter should briefly summarize previous points and clearly state that you recommend the candidate for employment (or graduate school, etc.). Finally, you want to give them your contact information in case they want to contact you directly.
