hey everyone welcome back to lumber capital log yard today im going to be showing you how we scale our logs this was a highly requested video so if you learn anything make sure that you give it a thumbs up and if you have any questions make sure that you leave it in the comments section down below in order to scale a log you will need a scaling stick there are three types of scaling sticks in pa doyle international and scribner which is the one that we use the way that you measure the board foot of a log is first you find its length then you match the length of the log with the numbers on the farthest end of your stick most scaling sticks use the small end of the log as the diameter this log is eight feet long so shes going to find the eight on her scaling stick and hold it so it is going through the diameter of the log it is important that you measure from the inside of the bark if a log isnt perfectly round two measurements might be necessary all scale sticks are a little differe

The international 1/4-inch log rule determines the volume of lumber from a log, accounting for the taper that exists in all logs, saw kerf (or the loss of wood as sawdust) and wood removed on the outside of the logs for slabs. The volume of lumber depends on the diamter, length and taper.
The board-foot content of any board may be determined by multiplying the length by the width by the thickness, all expressed in inches, and dividing by 144 cubic inches. The board foot is also the most common volume measure for trees and logs to be used for lumber and veneer.
The scaling diameter is the small-end diameter measured inside the bark. The laser scanning system measures all diameters outside the bark. To determine the scaling diameter, we estimated bark thickness and subtracted twice the thickness from the small-end diameter (Thomas and Bennett 2014a).
The board foot is the most common standard used for saw logs and lumber. A board foot contains 144 cubic inches of sawed lumber or the equivalent of a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 1 foot long. A second unit of measure is the cord.
