hello and welcome back to ap computer science principles i am mr cunningham and today we are going to expand what we can do with binary representation of numbers a little bit up until this point weve really only used binary to represent whole positive numbers but of course just like any system of math this system is so much more than that so lets start simple lets talk about what if we wanted to make some negative numbers if we wanted to represent say for example negative 27 okay in order to do that we have to set up some new rules for binary and that brings me to one of my most important points here the ones and zeros that weve been working on throughout this course so far dont have any inherent meaning on their own they only have meaning when you run them through a computer that then translates them back into numbers or text or pictures or whatever so if we want to represent a negative number we are going to have to come up with a rule for how to represent negative numbers so we

The conversion of a binary digit, or bit, into its opposite. For example, a 1 converted into a 0 is considered a negation.
Negation, ~, is the only unary operator in PL. Binary operators relate or connect two propositions. All operators of PL, except negation, are binary operators. Negation, ~, is the logical operator used to translate not, it is not the case that, it is false that, and related terms.
A binary code represents text, computer processor instructions, or any other data using a two-symbol system. The two-symbol system used is often 0 and 1 from the binary number system. The binary code assigns a pattern of binary digits, also known as bits, to each character, instruction, etc.
In computing, the exclamation mark is ASCII character 33 (21 in hexadecimal).
The symbol for XOR in Python is ^ and in mathematics, its symbol is . The XOR operator is placed between two numbers or boolean values.

NOT operation is performed on a single bit and it yields true (1) when the bit is false (0). The exclamation mark (!) or tilde (~) symbols are commonly used for NOT operation.
The logical negation operator ( ! ) reverses the meaning of its operand. The operand must be of arithmetic or pointer type (or an expression that evaluates to arithmetic or pointer type). The operand is implicitly converted to type bool .
The ~ (bitwise negation) operator yields the bitwise complement of the operand. In the binary representation of the result, every bit has the opposite value of the same bit in the binary representation of the operand.
The simplest is to simply use the leftmost digit of the number as a special value to represent the sign of the number: 0 = positive, 1 = negative. For example, a value of positive 12 (decimal) would be written as 01100 in binary, but negative 12 (decimal) would be written as 11100.
