♪ We see a lot of patients who have come to us because theyre at the end of the line. They really have no other options and theyre quite ill. Receiving a heart transplant is something that very few people have the advantage of receiving, and its a gift not only of life, its a gift of love, its a gift of someone elses family. So I think one of the things that we impress upon patients is that this is a gift that they have to take care of, and this is a gift that we as caregivers docHubly strive to make certain that goes well for them, as well for their family and thats one of the reasons why the team that we have and the strategy that we put forth is key. With or without treatment, heart failure is often and typically progressive, meaning it gradually gets worse. More than 5 million people in the United States have congestive heart failure. Its the most common diagnosis in hospitalized patients over age 65.
Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle doesnt pump blood as well as it should. Blood often backs up and causes fluid to build up in the lungs (congest) and in the legs. The fluid buildup can cause shortness of breath and swelling of the legs and feet. Poor blood flow may cause the skin to appear blue (cyanotic).
In Stage 4, symptoms will worsen for the patient and will not improve with treatment. This is the final stage of congestive heart failure.
Signs of Worsening Heart Failure Shortness of breath. Feeling dizzy or lightheaded. Weight gain of three or more pounds in one day. Weight gain of five pounds in one week. Unusual swelling in the legs, feet, hands, or abdomen. A persistent cough or chest congestion (the cough may be dry or hacking)
Patients are considered to be in the terminal end stage of heart disease when they have a life expectancy of six months or less. Only a doctor can make a clinical determination of congestive heart failure life expectancy.
In end stage heart failure, the body can no longer compensate for the lack of blood the heart pumps, and the heart has limited functional recovery. A person may find it difficult to breathe even when they are resting. This article will discuss end stage heart failure, including common signs and symptoms.
Some of the signs and symptoms of congestive heart failure include: Shortness of Breath. If your loved one has CHF, they may experience shortness of breath. Fatigue. Edema (Swelling, in the Feet, Ankles, and Legs) Arrhythmia (Irregular Heartbeat) Persistent Cough. Wheezing. Changes in Urination. Swelling of the Abdomen.

End-stage heart failure manifests as severe and often relentless symptoms that define the clinical syndrome of heart failure, namely congestion and hypoperfusion. These patients suffer from dyspnea, fatigue, abdominal discomfort and ultimately cardiac cachexia.
Stage four of congestive heart failure produces severe symptoms such as rapid breathing, chest pain, skin that appears blue, or fainting. These symptoms may occur whether you are exercising or at rest. In this stage, your doctor will discuss if surgery is beneficial.
