Unless the flag is folded, it should be carried on a handheld staff, so it can fly freely. It should never be carried flat, horizontally or vertically. The only time a flag can be carried flat is when it is draped over a casket at a funeral.
The flag is typically worn on the right shoulder of a military uniform, with the stars facing toward the front of the person wearing the uniform. One reason for this is that, when the flag is displayed this way, it appears to be flying as the troops march forward.
The U.S. flag insignia (full color or subdued) is 2 X 3 in size and is worn on the right shoulder pocket flap of utility uniforms and cold-weather jackets. The flag insignia is placed directly on top of the hook-and-loop-faced pad already provided on the uniforms shoulder pocket flap.
Hang the flag vertically with the stars at the top and the blue field (canton) in the upper left corner (as viewed from the front). If youre displaying multiple flags, place the military service flag to the viewers left, or furthest to the left as part of a group.
At a flag ceremony, you say the Pledge of Allegiance in the presence of a flag. You may also sing a patriotic song and repeat the Girl Scout Promise and Law. To salute the flag, stand at attention and place your right hand over your heart.
Out of respect for the U.S. flag, never: dip it for any person or thing, even though state flags, regimental colors and other flags may be dipped as a mark of honor. display it with the union down, except as a signal of distress. let the flag touch anything beneath it: ground, floor, water, merchandise.
The golden rule is to keep it stars before bars when aligning and positioning the flag on the attire. The idea is to have the stars always face the front of the body, with the stripes behind them, in a charging forward style. Alternatively, picture yourself wearing the shirt or it being mounted on a flagpole.
