Syncope is also known as fainting or a blackout. Its an abrupt and short-term loss of consciousness and motor tone. Its often caused by a sudden drop in blood flow to the brain or a lack of oxygen to the brain. Its then followed by complete and often rapid spontaneous recovery.
Does vasovagal syncope ever go away? Its very common for people to only have vasovagal syncope once in their lifetime. However, some people with specific triggers may have vasovagal syncope for the rest of their lives.
Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope. The vasovagal syncope trigger causes your heart rate and blood pressure to drop suddenly.
A common confounder of vasovagal syncope and presyncope is postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a multisystem disorder of the autonomic nervous system. The hallmark manifestation of POTS is symptomatic orthostatic tachycardia, with lightheadedness and presyncope.
Vasovagal syncope causes Vasovagal syncope happens when you have a sudden drop in blood pressure, which causes a drop in blood flow to your brain. It often occurs after standing for a while or under emotional distress.
Neurally mediated syncope (NMS) is the most common form of fainting and a frequent reason for emergency department visits. Its also called reflex, neurocardiogenic, vasovagal (VVS) or vasodepressor syncope. Its harmless and rarely requires medical treatment.
A whiteout or greyout is a transient loss of vision characterized by a perceived dimming of light and color. As a precursor to passing out, it is sometimes accompanied by a loss of peripheral vision and usually occurs much more slowly than a blackout.
How is vasovagal syncope treated? Avoiding triggers, such as standing for a long time or the sight of blood. Moderate exercise training. Discontinuing medicines that lower blood pressure, like diuretics. Eating a higher salt diet, to help keep up blood volume. Drinking plenty of fluids, to maintain blood volume.
