Because the procedure touches the cervix, it can trigger vasovagal response - the stimulation of the vagus nerve which can make you lightheaded, sweaty, and dizzy. This can lower your blood pressure making you feel faint. Other side effects of smears are temporary bleeding (spotting) and cramping.
HPV is what usually causes an abnormal Pap smear result, says Ferris. However, those within the 21-29 age bracket are not tested for HPV unless their Pap finds atypical cells that may indicate HPV. HPV can get into cells, causing them to change, continued Ferris.
Low-grade cervical changes are unlikely to become cervical cancer. If the changes are moderate- to high-grade, your doctor will evaluate more options. These changes create a higher risk of cervical cancer. If there are moderate to severe changes in your cervix, your doctor may want to remove the cervical tissue.
Most of the abnormal cells found during a Pap test are the result of a cervical or vaginal infection and are not cancerous. Abnormal Pap tests are very common. In fact, of the 3 million women with abnormal Pap tests each year, less than 1% (13,240 cases) will be diagnosed with cervical cancer.
Specimens that are unsatisfactory for evaluation are reportable with diagnosis code 795.08. If the sample was unsatisfactory and another Pap test needs to be taken, clinicians should report 795.08 as the primary diagnosis to justify that the service is medically necessary. Higher risk: Your test results show either HPV infection with types 16 and/or 18, high grade cell changes on your cervix, or persistent infection with one of the other high-risk HPV types (not 16/18). It is important that you have a further follow-up because you may be at a high risk of developing cervical cancer.
Unsatisfactory results on a Pap smear indicate that the sample of cervical cells obtained for the test either didnt have enough cells on the slide to be examined or the quality of the slide wasnt satisfactory. Unsatisfactory results may be followed up by a repeat Pap smear.
Sometimes the results are unclear because the lab sample doesnt contain enough cells to evaluate (insufficient cell count) or because the cells are obscured by inflammation, mucus, or blood from a heavy menstrual period.
There are 3 main categories, some of which have sub-categories: Negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy. Epithelial cell abnormalities. Other malignant neoplasms.
