However, many syncope episodes may be accompanied by jerky body movements that can look similar to a seizure but tend to be brief in duration. Physical examination The clinician will measure your heart rate and blood pressure to help determine if a rhythm disturbance or low blood pressure caused the syncope.
When coming round after a faint, the person often feels awful, sickly and may vomit, or even have diarrhoea. Often there is prolonged fatigue after a faint.
Feeling faint is known as presyncope. This causes the feeling of lightheadedness with the sensation that youll pass out without actually losing consciousness, or syncope. Warning symptoms, such as feeling warm and sweaty, blurred vision or seeing stars, racing heart and feeling weak often precede the faint feeling.
Your field of vision may black out or white out. Your skin may also feel cold and clammy to the touch. You will usually drop to the floor when losing consciousness.
Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope. The vasovagal syncope trigger causes your heart rate and blood pressure to drop suddenly.
Fainting is a temporary loss of consciousness. If youre about to faint, youll feel dizzy, lightheaded, or nauseous. Your field of vision may white out or black out. Your skin may be cold and clammy. You lose muscle control at the same time, and may fall down.
Once an attack starts, the following are likely to happen: Loss of consciousness and falling to the ground, usually for no more than 15 seconds. Eyes remain open but roll up and back into your head. Twitching movements, which can sometimes be mistaken for a seizure.
First aid for fainting Check that the person is breathing. Check that their heart is beating. Call 911 or seek immediate medical attention if theyre hurt.
