In the New Testament faint is used in the sense of physical exhaustion (Matthew 9:36 the King James Version; Matthew 15:32; Mark 8:3), where it is part of the verb ekluo, to relax. Otherwise it is used figuratively of discouragement of spirit.
Jesus taught that we are to pray, and not to faint (Luke 18:1). In that verse, Jesus is saying that prayer and fainting are opposites, which is not the way we usually think of them. To faint means literally to become weak or powerless.
1. : to lose consciousness because of a temporary decrease in the blood supply to the brain. 2. archaic : to lose courage or spirit.
Fainting is a loss of consciousness due to abnormal blood circulation. In a spiritual sense, to faint means to lose heart or courage, to give up, or to quit. Many believers today suffer from spiritual fainting spells they abandon their faith and give up on God.
Something faint has no courage or vigor. If you suddenly round the corner and see a gang of bullies staring straight at you, chances are youll feel faint. Faint comes from the French feindre, for being cowardly or shirking duties. We usually use it to mean without great strength.
Vasovagal syncope (vay-zoh-VAY-gul SING-kuh-pee) occurs when you faint because your body overreacts to certain triggers, such as the sight of blood or extreme emotional distress. It may also be called neurocardiogenic syncope.
Syncope is the medical term for fainting or passing out. It refers to a relatively sudden loss of consciousness, followed by a spontaneous rapid and complete recovery.
If our prayers seem to go unanswered, He reminds us that men ought always to pray, and not to faint (Luke 18:1). When we grow tired and are tempted to quit, the Scriptures assure us that in due season we shall reap, if we faint not (Galatians 6:9).
