If you have a positive result for HPV we will check the sample for abnormal cells. Abnormal cells are not cancer, but they could develop into cancer if left untreated. As a next step we may offer you another examination (called a colposcopy) to look at your cervix more closely.
Smear the sample onto the labeled slide. Fix the sample immediately (before it is air-dried) using a cytology spray fixative. Hold the fixative 15-20 cm (6 to 8 inches) away from the slide and evenly spray the slide by depressing the plunger 2 or 3 times.
A Pap smear is a procedure that involves collecting cells from the cervix for testing. It also is called a Pap test. Healthcare professionals sometimes call it cervical cytology.
Once a Pap smear has been collected and properly fixed with the supplied spray fixative, it may be stored at room temperature for an indefinite period of time. It is important to note: Pap slides must not be stored or transported in the same secondary containers as formalin fixed tissue samples.
PLEASE NOTE: The specimen does not need to be refrigerated or packed with ice.
Specimen should be stored in the ThinPrep PreservCyt vial at room temperature. Optimal smears are obtained mid-cycle. Specimens obtained during menses are frequently limited and may be non-diagnostic due to obscuring blood and inflammation. Check expiration date on collection container before using.
Women age 21 to 29 should have a Pap test alone every 3 years. HPV testing alone can be considered for women who are 25 to 29, but Pap tests are preferred. Women age 30 to 65 have three options for testing. They can have both a Pap test and an HPV test every 5 years.
