Snapshot is a point in time backup of specific volume while AMI is is backup of the entire EC2 instance that might have multiple attached volumes, exactly like virtual machines. With Packer, you can build automated machine images including AMIs for EC2, VMDK/VMX files for VMware, OVF exports for VirtualBox, etc.
You can define and enable a policy for automatically deleting Snapshot copies by using the snap autodelete command. Automatically deleting Snapshot copies can help you manage space utilization....Specifies when to begin automatically deleting Snapshot copies. volume. ... snap_reserve. ... space_reserve.
By default, when you create an AMI from an instance, snapshots are taken of each EBS volume attached to the instance. AMIs can launch with multiple EBS volumes attached, allowing you to replicate both an instance's configuration and the state of all the EBS volumes that are attached to that instance.
Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the Amazon RDS console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/rds/ . In the navigation pane, choose Snapshots. The Manual snapshots list appears. Choose the DB snapshot that you want to delete. For Actions, choose Delete snapshot. Choose Delete on the confirmation page.
The maximum retention period currently available for automated snapshots is 35 days. When automated backups are turned on for your DB Instance, Amazon RDS automatically performs a full, daily snapshot of your data and captures transaction logs.
To delete a snapshot using the console Open the Amazon EC2 console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/ . In the navigation pane, choose Snapshots. Select the snapshot to delete, and then choose Actions, Delete snapshot. Choose Delete.
You can't delete a snapshot of the root device of an EBS volume used by a registered AMI. You must first deregister the AMI before you can delete the snapshot. For more information, see Deregister your AMI. You can't delete a snapshot that is managed by the AWS Backup service using Amazon EC2.
To delete an image (AWS Management Console) In the navigation pane, choose Repositories. On the Repositories page, choose the repository that contains the image to delete. On the Repositories: repository_name page, select the box to the left of the image to delete and choose Delete.
Your EC2 instance might not terminate for the following reasons: The instance is in the stopping or pending state. Termination protection is enabled on the instance. There are incorrect permissions on the AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) policy attached to the role or user attempting to terminate the instance.
Delete an image Select the check box next to the Version for any image that you want to delete. You can select more than one image version at a time. At the top of the Image build versions panel, choose Delete version.
