A new report highlights a troubling increase in nursing home closures in the U.S., with 1,000 facilities shutting down in recent years and hundreds more at risk, including in the Houston area. Since 2015, nursing home closures have surged, especially due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to the closure of 327 homes nationwide and an additional 400 projected for this year. Over 44,000 residents have been displaced by these closures since 2015. The report, released by the American Healthcare Association (AHCA), emphasizes the pandemic's impact on nursing homes. Greg Shelley, an ombudsman for UT Health Houston, advocates for the rights of nursing home residents amidst these challenges.
