The question is: does the punctuation go inside or outside the final quotation mark? The rule is: If the quoted words end with a full stop (or comma), then the full stop goes inside the quotation marks. If the quoted words do not end with a full stop, then the full stop goes outside the quotation marks.
Place a colon at the end of the last line before the block quote. This indicates that the quotation should be read seamlessly with your own text. Punctuate the text of the quote exactly as the original source does. TIP: Use block quotes only when the authors original words cannot be paraphrased or summarized.
The quote can be embedded like this: John exhibits his true feelings for Sarah when she finds him waiting at her door with her favorite flowers and a sorrowful expression on his face (Doe 75). This quote would then be followed by more analysis of Johns feelings for Sarah.
When to use a COLON: If you use a complete sentence to introduce a quotation, place a colon (not a comma) after the sentence and before the quote.
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
The quote can be embedded like this: John exhibits his true feelings for Sarah when she finds him waiting at her door with her favorite flowers and a sorrowful expression on his face (Doe 75). This quote would then be followed by more analysis of Johns feelings for Sarah.
When you quote directly from a source, enclose the quoted section in quotation marks. Add an in-text citation at the end of the quote with the author name and page number, like this: Heres a direct quote (Smith 8).
