The four most common ways are to credit either 1) only the studio/company, 2) only the name of the main designer, 3) inconsistently across media, or 4) as part of the general description. Other disciplines (e.g. printer, photographer, illustrator) are more often outlined rather than parts of the type design process.
There are four permissions of font embeddability installable, editable, print/preview and restricted. Installable - Allows fonts to be embedded in the document and installed permanently in the computer. Editable - Allows fonts to be embedded in the document but only installs fonts temporarily in the system.
Typefaces cannot be copyrighted, but the font software used to display them can be. This distinction is crucial because it separates the visual design of characters (typeface) from the underlying code that instructs computers and printers how to reproduce those characters (fonts).
Fonts are software entitled to intellectual property protection, and as such, require a license to legally use without potential fines, lawsuits, and other penalties. This is known as a font license and is a legal agreement that allows you to use a particular font for a specific purpose.
With a few exceptions, many free fonts are only for personal use. That means you can download them and use them to test out the look of your book, but if you want to sell commercially, you will need to buy the license to that font.
Some Office apps let you embed fonts in your documents. That way, if you share your document with someone else who doesnt have the same fonts installed that you do, the fonts, layout, and styling of the document wont change, and special characters wont turn into meaningless rectangles.
Most fonts and designs are protected by copyright, so its important to make sure you have the right to use them in your logo. Contact the owner of the font or design to ask for permission. This could be the creator of the font or design or a company that owns the rights to it.
