An embedded Smart Object has no connection with the original source image once its placed into a Photoshop document. On the other hand, when you add a Linked Smart Object to a Photoshop document, that linked layer or layers are still connected to the original document.
To add a hyperlink in Photoshop, select the Slice Tool and drag around the element you wish to link. Right-click inside the box you made and choose Edit Slice Options. Add your link in the URL box, and blank in the target box. Now export your file to PNG, with the Format set to HTML and Images.
Go to Layer New Adjustment Layer Curves and create a new curves layer. In recent versions of Photoshop, theres a cross process option in the Presets menu. Choose this as a basic starting point for your image.

So Embedded means-- Im going to place an image, and its going to go inside this Photoshop file. Its going to be fully contained within this PSD. If I link it, its going to show it in this file, but actually its going back to this source, the original thing on my desktop, the whole time.
