In the simplest terms, editors stitch together raw footage to create a cohesive and coherent story. But one of the most vital features of a good edit is the establishment of tone. Tone is the aspect of a piece that describes its particular mood, character, atmosphere and flavor.
In photography, toning is a method of altering the color of black-and-white photographs. In analog photography, it is a chemical process carried out on metal salt-based prints, such as silver prints, iron-based prints (cyanotype or Van Dyke brown), or platinum or palladium prints.
The Tone Curve (simply referred to as curves by most photographers) is a powerful tool in Lightroom that can affect an images overall brightness and contrast. By adjusting the Tone Curve, you can make your photos brighter or darker and affect the contrast levels.
To correct them, you need to use one of the Color Curves. There is a third way to edit a curve: using the Targeted Adjustment option. Select it and click and drag on the point of your image you want to brighten or darken. Lightroom will select the tones to change and adjust the curve.
But one of the most vital features of a good edit is the establishment of tone. Tone is the aspect of a piece that describes its particular mood, character, atmosphere and flavor.
In the Basic panel of the Develop module, adjust the Temp and Tint sliders. Temp. Temp or Temperature sets how yellow/warm or blue/cool your photo looks. Tint. Tint sets how green or magenta your photo is. Clarity. Adds depth to an image by increasing local contrast. Dehaze. Vibrance. Saturation.
There are two different curves within the Tone Curve panel the Parametric and the Point curve. While both curves can be used to make adjustments to the tonal values in an image, the Point Curve can also be used to change color values.
Also often referd to as value the tone of an image can have a drastic effect on how an image feels; Images containing many dark tones often appear dramatic and sad while images featuring light tones appear happy and vibrant.
